Fill Your Quiet Hours: 7 Marketing Ideas That Actually Work for Beauty Pros
Every beauty professional knows that horrible feeling.
You open next week’s diary, and there is far too much white space.
Your first thought might be to post an offer. Drop the price. Boost something on Instagram. Anything to get those appointments filled.
But before you discount a treatment you’ve spent years learning how to perform, there are much smarter things to try.
Because often:
A quiet diary isn’t a price problem. It’s a booking problem.
Here are seven strategies you may not have thought about.
1. Look Backwards Before You Look for New Clients
When appointments are quiet, we immediately think we need new clients.
You may not.
Some of the easiest appointments to fill are sitting inside your existing database.
Look for the client who used to come every 6 weeks but hasn’t been back for 4 months. The regular facial client who suddenly disappeared. The brow client who said she’d rebook and never did.
These people already know you. They already trust you.
And don’t send them a generic
“We miss you! Here’s 20% off.”
Send 10 personal messages instead.
“Hi Sarah, I realised I haven’t seen you for a while. How has your skin been? I’ve got a couple of appointments next week if you’re due for a facial. Lisa x”
It takes longer.
It also feels completely different to receive.
2. There’s a Surprisingly Expensive Little Phrase: “DM to Book”
Here’s something many beauty professionals don’t realise.
Square reports that 39% of beauty and personal-care appointments booked through its appointment platform happen between 6pm and 10am.
Your clients are booking when you’re closed.
They’re scrolling in bed. They’re on the sofa after dinner. They’re finally getting around to booking the facial they’ve been thinking about for 3 weeks.
And when they’re ready, you want them to be able to book.
Not DM TO BOOK.
Not “Send me your preferred dates.”
Not wait until tomorrow for you to reply.
Go onto your Instagram and Google profile tonight and pretend you’ve never met yourself.
How quickly can you actually give yourself money?
If it’s difficult, fix that before spending another $ trying to attract more people.
3. Google Yourself, But Don’t Use Your Name
This is one of my favourites.
Most of us Google our business name and feel quite pleased when we appear at the top.
But of course you do.
The person typing your business name already knows about you.
The interesting person is the one typing
“facialist near me”
“best brows Bondi”
“skin treatment Paddington”
“lash lift near me”
Open an incognito browser and search the way a stranger would search for your service.
Now see where you appear.
Google says local results are influenced by relevance, distance and prominence, with complete business information and reviews helping Google understand and rank local businesses.
So your Google Business Profile isn’t boring admin.
It is a shop window sitting in front of people actively looking for the thing you sell.
Make sure your treatments, hours, booking link, photographs and business information are current.
4. Ask for the Review When the Client Is Happiest
Not 3 days later.
Not in a monthly newsletter.
Right then.
Your client sits up, looks in the mirror and says:
“Oh wow. My skin looks incredible.”
That’s the moment.
You can simply say:
“I’m so glad. If you ever have a minute to put that into a Google review, it really helps people find me. I’ll text you the link.”
Then actually text the link.
One thing you shouldn’t do is offer a discount or free treatment in return for a Google review. Google prohibits incentivised reviews.
You don’t need to buy praise anyway.
A steady stream of genuine reviews is far more valuable.
5. Stop Asking, “Do You Want to Rebook?”
This tiny change can make a big difference.
If you’ve just treated someone’s skin and you know she should return in 6 weeks, why are you asking her whether she thinks she should come back?
You’re the professional.
Instead of:
“Did you want to book another one?”
Say:
“I’d like to see you again in about 6 weeks. Let’s find a time now before the good appointments disappear.”
That’s not hard selling.
It’s a professional recommendation.
And here’s the bigger idea:
The best time to fill a quiet week in October is often in August.
If more clients leave with their next appointment already booked, you spend far less time frantically trying to fill gaps later.
6. Create a Secret Weapon: Your “I Can Come Anytime” List
Every beauty business has these clients.
The freelancer.
The woman who lives around the corner.
The client who says, “If you ever get a cancellation, call me.”
Write them down.
Keep a simple short-notice list with what they have, when they’re generally free and how much notice they need.
Then when tomorrow’s 11am suddenly disappears, you aren’t advertising to 2,000 random Instagram followers.
You might have five people who have already told you they want that call.
That’s a very different type of marketing.
And if you do put the cancellation on Stories, be specific.
Not:
Appointments available this week.
Try:
JUST BECAME AVAILABLE
Tomorrow 11am
60-minute facial
Someone can immediately think:
I can do 11.
7. And If Nobody Books It? The Hour Still Has Value.
This is perhaps the biggest mindset change.
An appointment is perishable inventory.
Once Tuesday at 2pm has passed, you can never sell Tuesday at 2pm again.
So if you’ve genuinely tried to fill it and nobody books, don’t automatically waste it.
Film 3 Reels.
Photograph a treatment.
Practise a new technique.
Collaborate with another local professional.
Or swap the appointment with another beauty professional.
It’s one of the reasons I created My Beauty Swap.
Beauty professionals spend their days providing treatments for everyone else, then pay full price when they want their own hair, skin, nails, brows, massage or other treatments done.
Meanwhile, almost all of us occasionally have unused appointment time.
My Beauty Swap allows qualified beauty professionals to offer treatments to other verified professionals, earn Points, and use those points towards treatments for themselves.
You’re not giving away an appointment that could have been sold.
You’re finding value in an hour that was going to earn you nothing.
And you might gain something else too: a professional connection, collaboration or someone who genuinely understands your work and recommends you.
Before You Discount, Look at the Real Problem
A quiet week doesn’t automatically mean people think you’re too expensive.
Maybe old clients simply haven’t been reminded to return.
Maybe people are finding you at 10pm but can’t book you.
Maybe you’re invisible on Google for the treatments you actually offer.
Maybe clients are leaving without their next appointment.
Maybe you’re marketing a cancellation to everyone instead of the five people most likely to take it.
Fix those things before you touch your prices.
You don’t always need more followers.
You don’t always need another promotion.
And you certainly don’t need to train your clients to wait for a discount.
Sometimes you simply need to make the diary you already have work a little harder.
